According to industry standards like ISO 5488 and EN 1263-1, these nets must meet specific material and strength requirements:

• Materials: Typically manufactured from high-strength synthetic fibers like polypropylene (PP) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) due to their UV resistance, buoyancy, and durability in harsh saltwater environments.
• Mesh Size: Standard sizes range from 50mm to 150mm. Smaller mesh (50–60mm) is preferred for preventing tool drops, while 100–150mm is standard for personnel fall arrest.
• Load Capacity: Most certified nets support dynamic loads between 200 kg and 600 kg.
• Common Dimensions: Frequently available in standard sizes linked to IMPA codes (e.g., 232161 and 232162):

  • 4m x 25m

Regulatory and Safety Requirements

• Mandatory Use: Under the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers, a safety net must be fitted under every part of a gangway or ladder where a fall risk exists.
• Rigging Standards: According to OSHA 1918.22, nets must prevent workers from falling into the water or onto lower levels. Maritime regulations often require the net to extend at least 8 meters on both sides of the gangway.
• Maintenance: Nets should be inspected daily for wear or tears and undergo detailed monthly inspections. They generally have a service life of 5–7 years with proper maintenance.
