A foundry hook is a specialized, heavy-duty rigging hook characterized by an exceptionally wide throat opening and the absence of a safety latch. Designed specifically for high-heat and demanding environments found in foundries, steel mills, and manufacturing plants, they are used to lift bulky, hot, or irregularly shaped loads, such as ladles of molten metal, large castings, or forgings. Because they lack a safety latch, they are often used when the safety hazard of reaching up to connect a load outweighs the risk of accidental disengagement.
