Wire Rope Clip – Drop Forged

Drop forged wire rope clips are heavy-duty fasteners used to secure the loose end of a wire rope when forming an eye. Unlike malleable clips, drop forged clips are recommended for critical applications such as overhead lifting, tensioning, and permanent rigging because they offer higher tensile strength and better resistance to fatigue.

Specifications

Core Specifications and Standards

  • Manufacturing Process: These clips are manufactured by drop forging a single piece of steel, which provides a denser grain structure and superior strength compared to cast or stamped alternatives.
  • Efficiency: Properly installed drop forged clips provide an efficiency rating of 80% to 90%of the wire rope’s breaking strength, depending on the rope’s diameter and the number of clips used.
  • Common Standards: High-quality clips typically meet Federal Specification FF-C-450 Dor ASME B30.26 requirements for identification, design factor, and ductility.
  • Materials: Most are made from carbon steel and hot-dip galvanized to resist corrosion. For marine environments, Type 304 or 316 Stainless Steel variants are available.

Proper Installation (“Never Saddle a Dead Horse”)

Incorrect installation can reduce the efficiency of a wire rope termination by up to 40%.

  1. Placement: The saddle must always be placed on the “live” (load-bearing) end of the rope, while the U-bolt goes over the “dead” (tail) end.
  2. Quantity: Always use the minimum number of clips required for the rope diameter (e.g., a 1-1/4″ rope typically requires 7 clips).
  3. Spacing: Clips should be spaced equally, usually at a distance of about 6 times the rope diameter.
  4. Torque: Nuts must be tightened evenly to the manufacturer’s specified torque and re-tightened after the first load is applied.

We carry both common types as well as premium models from Crosby depending on user’s requirements.
