4X39 FC

The 4×39 wire rope is a specialized, rugged construction primarily used for heavy-duty lifting where stability and resistance to crushing are critical. Unlike standard 6-strand ropes, its 4-strand design is often rotation-resistant and optimized for specialized machinery.

Key Characteristics

  • Rotation Resistance: Designed to minimize self-rotation under load, making it a “Category 2” rotation-resistant rope. Note that the use of a swivel is typically not permitted with this rope.
  • Superior Crush Resistance: Its unique 4-strand geometry (often including “Shaped Strands” like 4xV39) provides a smooth outer finish that resists deforming or “bird-caging” during multi-layer spooling on winch drums.
  • Swaged/Compacted Finish: Many 4×39 ropes are swaged(mechanically compacted), which increases wire density, boosts breaking strength, and creates a smoother surface to reduce wear on sheaves.
  • High Flexibility: Despite its ruggedness, the 39 wires per strand (often in a 15-15/9 layout) provide significant flexibility for navigating complex pulley systems.
  • Shock Absorption: Usually features a Fiber Core (FC)that helps absorb shock loads during repetitive movements.

Typical Usage

This rope is a standard choice for high-intensity industrial and marine applications:

  • Japanese Crane Brands: Frequently used as the primary hoist rope for Japanese-manufactured mobile and tower cranes.
  • Ship Deck Cranes: Ideal for shipboard unloaders and cargo lifting due to its resistance to the harsh marine environment (often supplied in galvanized finish).
  • Piling & Drilling: Used as a replacement rope for pile driving and boom hoists where extreme external pressure is applied to the rope.
  • Heavy Construction: Employed in major infrastructure projects (e.g., NEOM) for tension lines and winch cables.
  • Oil & Gas: Utilized in drilling rigs and wireline hoisting where compacted strands are needed to resist wear during constant spooling.
