Wire Rope Clip

Stainless steel wire rope clips are used to secure the ends of wire ropes or create load-bearing eye loops. They are typically available in two main grades: 304 stainless steel, suitable for general indoor and light outdoor use, and 316 stainless steel, which is marine-grade and highly resistant to saltwater and chemicals.

Types of Clips

  • U-Bolt Clips: The most common design, consisting of a U-shaped bolt, a saddle, and two nuts. These come in forged (heavy-duty) and malleable (light-duty) versions.
  • Fist Grip (Double Saddle) Clips: Feature two saddles that grip both sides of the rope evenly, reducing the risk of rope crushing and simplifying installation since they are symmetrical.
  • Simplex and Duplex Clamps: Stamped plates used primarily for light-duty architectural or decorative applications.
  • Cross Clamps: Specialized for creating 90-degree intersections in wire rope grids.

Selection and Specifications

According to industry standards like DIN 741 or ASME B30.26, clips must be matched precisely to the diameter of the wire rope.

  • Common Sizes: Standard metric sizes include M3 (3mm) to M10 (20mm) and larger. U.S. fractional sizes typically range from 1/16″ to 1″ (25mm).
  • Number of Clips: For a secure termination, most safety standards require a minimum of 3 clips for rope diameters up to 5/8″.
  • Installation Rule: “Never saddle a dead horse.” Always place the saddle on the “live” (load-bearing) side of the rope and the U-bolt on the “dead” (short) end.

Caution: Never use wire rope clips on PVC-coated cable without first stripping the coating to ensure the clip grips the bare metal core directly
