Pilot Ladder

A pilot ladder is a rope ladder used to safely transfer marine pilots between a vessel and a pilot boat. It is manufactured to meet maritime safety standards, using high-quality rope and durable steps to ensure strength, stability, and secure footing in all sea conditions. Reliable and easy to deploy, the pilot ladder is essential for safe ship boarding and disembarkation.

Specifications

To order a pilot ladder, you must specify the required length, step type, and ensure the product meets SOLAS Chapter V/Reg. 23 or ISO 799:2004 standards. Most maritime suppliers require you to submit an inquiry with your vessel’s freeboard details to determine the correct configuration.

Essential Ordering Specifications

When placing an order, provide the following details to ensure compliance with international maritime safety regulations:

  • Total Length: Measure from the point of access to the water’s edge at the vessel’s lightest draught; standard lengths range from 2 to 22 meters.
  • Step Material: Standard steps must be hardwood (typically ash or oak) in one piece and free of knots.
  • Bottom Structure: Specify if you need an open-endor closed-end design for the bottom steps.
  • Rubber Steps: The four lowest steps should be made of rubber or another resilient material with equivalent strength.
  • Certifications: Ensure the ladder is MED/SOLAS approved and comes with a manufacturer’s certificate.
  • Customization: Offers custom lengths from 2m to 22m and provides closed-end or open-end bottom structures.

Important Regulatory Requirements

Ordering the wrong ladder can lead to vessel detention or serious safety risks:

  • Spreader Steps: Ladders with more than five steps must have spreader steps (minimum 1.8m long) to prevent twisting.
  • Side Ropes: Must be made of uncovered manila rope at least 18mm in diameter with a breaking strength of at least 24 KN.
  • Combination Arrangements: If the distance from the water to the access point exceeds 9 meters, you must also order and rig an accommodation ladder in conjunction with the pilot ladder.
