Usage Instructions
For safe operation, HLC clamps must be used in a specific manner:
- Work in Pairs: Horizontal clamps should always be used in pairs, sets of pairs, or a tripod arrangement to maintain load balance and stability.
- Proper Seating: Insert the load completely until it contacts the deepest part of the jaw opening.
- Center of Gravity: Position the clamps directly over the load’s center of gravity. If the plate is long and tends to bend, use multiple pairs with a spreader beam to prevent twisting.
- Sling Alignment: Ensure the clamps face each other to balance horizontal forces. Use equal-length wire ropes, keeping the lifting angle typically within 60° (or as specified by the manufacturer).
- Lock Engagement: If the model features a safety lock handle, ensure it is fully engaged before starting the lift.
Safety Precautions
Adhering to these precautions is critical to prevent accidents:
- Minimum Load Requirement: Many cam-action clamps require a minimum load—often at least 20% of the Safe Working Load (SWL)—to engage the gripping force safely.
- Thickness Limitations: The material thickness should not be less than 20% of the maximum jaw opening.
- Surface Condition: The load surface must be clean and free of scale, grease, paint, or oil that could reduce friction.
- Material Hardness: Standard HLC clamps are generally suitable for materials with a surface hardness below 30 Rockwell C (HRC)or 300HB.
- Prohibited Maneuvers: Never attempt to rotate a load from horizontal to vertical (or vice-versa) using these clamps, and never lift more than one plate at a time in a single clamp.
