
A cargo net looks like the simplest thing in the yard, so it gets bought on size and price alone. That is exactly why it fails. The part that carries the load is not the part most buyers look at, the rating is often missing, and the wrong type of net gets pressed into lifting when it was never built for it. This guide sets out how to specify a cargo net that holds in Singapore’s marine and industrial conditions.
Not All Cargo Nets Do the Same Job
The most dangerous mistake is treating every net as interchangeable. They are not. A net built to catch falling debris is not built to lift a tonne of it, and only one type on this list is rated for hoisting a load.

The Rim Rope Carries the Load, Not the Mesh
Here is the detail that separates a net that holds from one that lets go. A cargo net has two very different ropes in it. The mesh rope forms the squares that contain the load. The rim rope, or border rope, runs around the edge and takes the actual lifting force, which is why it is always the thicker of the two: a typical net pairs an 18mm polypropylene mesh with a 24mm rim.
This is also why a cargo net almost never fails in the middle. It fails at the border and corners, where the lifting force concentrates and where the net meets the thimbles, rings or shackles that connect it to the crane. On mesh size the rule is simpler: too large and small items slip through, too small and you pay for weight you do not need.
Choosing the Material: Polypropylene, Manila or Wire-Reinforced

Polypropylene rope is the standard for marine cargo nets. It floats, resists rot and most chemicals, and is economical, which is why most nets in a Singapore port are made from polypropylene rope. Manila rope appears where grip and heat resistance matter more than water resistance, though in Singapore’s humidity a manila rope net rots if stored wet, so it has largely given way to synthetics for general cargo work.
For heavy or sharp-edged loads that would chafe through fibre, a wire-reinforced border is the answer, where a wire rope clip and thimble terminate the steel edge. Match the material to the load and environment, not to whatever is cheapest that day.
SWL, Safety Factor and the Unmarked-Net Problem
Every lifting net carries a safe working load, which is not the point at which it breaks. It is the breaking strength divided by a safety factor, commonly 3:1 to 5:1 in marine use, so a net rated at 1.5 tonnes is built from rope that breaks far higher. That leads to the most important rule here: an unmarked net is an uncertified net. If a cargo net has no SWL tag, you do not know what it can lift and cannot safely use it for lifting at all. A compliant net shows its safe working load, material and size, and comes with a certificate. Without those, it is scrap for lifting, whatever it looks like.
Securing the Load: Where Ratchet Tie Downs Come In
A cargo net and a ratchet tie down solve two problems people often confuse. A net contains and lifts a loose load. A ratchet tie down secures a load for transport, holding it on a flatbed, trailer or container so it does not shift. If your job is moving a palletised load rather than hoisting a loose one, a ratchet tie down or load binder is the right gear, not a net.
Inspecting a Cargo Net: What Actually Fails
A cargo net fails in predictable places, and a two-minute check catches almost all of it. Inspect the rim rope and corners first, the load path where chafe concentrates. Look for UV damage across the whole net, since polypropylene embrittles in Singapore’s unshaded sun, and a faded, stiff net has already lost strength. Check the mesh for cuts and the thimbles and rings for wear. The discard rule is simple: damage to the rim or corners condemns the net, while isolated mesh damage may be repairable. Store nets dry, off the ground and out of the sun, and they last years longer.
